    At my home coriander powder is being prepared since a very long time. Though sometime we become lazy and buy readymade masalas. It’s very common in India to see the spices being prepared from the whole form to the powdered form which are later used in numerous recipes. Among them is coriander or Dhaniya powder.

    In earlier times people used to prepare the powder by crushing them in a pestle and mortar by hands which used to consume a lot of time. Nowadays there are electric grinders which have made the whole process shorter and smoother and, in few seconds, the powdered spice is ready.

    In almost all Indian recipes you will find coriander powder being used. It adds aroma to the recipe it is added to. In southern states of India, it is used on a larger scale in south India to prepare some of the mouth-watering and popular recipes.

    It is used in many cuisines around the world be it Thai, Chinese, Mexican or European to prepare some exotic dishes.

    Preparing spice powder at home has many reasons among them is extended storage life as the whole spice keeps the oils within them intact which gives nice aroma while cooking and amazing flavours to the recipe in the end.

    How to make Coriander/ Dhaniya powder

    This recipe is quite easy and simple to prepare. After reading the steps you won’t have to purchase the readymade masalas from the Kirana stores or supermarkets.

    Method to prepare coriander powder

    Step 1(choosing quality seeds)

    Pick good quality coriander seeds and get rid of any unwanted substances in them like stones. Pick the required quantity to prepare the masala. Preparing the masala in small quantities is preferred over large quantity as large quantity loses the fragrance after sometime.

    Step 2 (1st choice)

    After picking the quantity, it is time for the seeds to do some sun bathing for a day or two.  To prevent dust particles cover it with a mesh or a fine cloth which will not hinder the process of ventilation.

    Step 2 (2nd choice)

    If you want to speed up the process and don’t want to wait for two days then here is another method which you may like to try. Take the quantity that you have separated and add it to the cooking pan and roast it till they become crisp, aromatic and with a change in colour. Wait for them to cool down.

    Step 3 (Grinding)

    After the seeds have cooled down transfer them to the grinder and prepare a fine powder.

    Step 4 (Storage)

    Store this homemade masala powder in clean and air tight container. Use it as required to make aromatic and wonderful recipes. It can be combined with other spices too.

    Note:

    Add in adequate quantity as adding them in large quantity can unbalance the flavours.
