Beetroot Halwa | Chukandar Halwa | Chukandar ka halwa with step-by-step instructions. Got a sweet tooth, join the party. Yes! I am talking about a halwa, and that too an unusual one, its beetroot halwa. Startled!! well one of the lesser-known recipes of chukandar/ beetroot. Bestowed with numerous nutrients, this halwa, besides being a gourmet delight, is packed with goodness. Sumptuous as it is, once tasted I bet your sweet tooth will crave for more.

Beetroot is naturally loaded with sugar and is released once the vegetable is cooked, so we have to add less sugar.
India is a country of festivals, and we are always in the midst of celebrations, mostly during festivals we exchange and eat sweets as they are an integral part of our celebrations and culture. Beetroot halwa is no exception and also can be enjoyed whenever we feel like it.
What is halwa?
Halwa is a traditional Indian sweet which is prepared either from
semolina also called as sooji in hindi, atta halwa vegetables like
pumpkin, carrots and beets. One can also prepare halwa from lentils like
moong dal.
This mouthwatering halwa is garnished with raisins, almonds, cardamom and saffron. Halwa sweetness can be adapted according to ones taste by increasing or decreasing the sugar quantity.
Different Types of Halwa and Their Benefits
As discussed above there are numerous varieties of halwa that can be prepared and relished whether hot or cold as per one's liking. I am sharing with you some different halwa and their benefits in succeeding sections.
Carrot Halwa
Carrot halwa is relished all over Indian subcontinent, each having unique taste. One isn’t just having carrot halwa but there are benefits from the vitamins and minerals that it is endowed with. One can prepare carrot halwa with simple ingredients like grated carrots, sugar / jaggery powder, ghee and chopped dry fruits.
Benefits Of Carrot Halwa
Carrot halwa is loaded with vitamins like A, C, K which helps in curing night blindness. Carrots aid to improve one's eyesight. Gajar reduces hair fall by making it strong. It is known to fight diseases like cancer by boosting immunity. It contains a high concentration of Omega 3 fatty acids which is beneficial for the heart and cardiovascular system.
Semolina / Sooji halwa
Also called by name sooji in Hindi, this is another halwa that carries loads of benefits along with awesome flavor. I too have tasted it many times. This halwa holds special place in every Indian heart as on Ashtami (Eighth day of Navratri), it is prepared in every Indian household with great religious fervor, and is then served and distributed amongst the devotees. One can prepare this with a few commonly available raw materials like sooji, ghee, water and sugar.
Benefits Of Semolina / Sooji halwa
Loaded with iron, magnesium it is one of the most relished halwa all over India and the India diaspora all over the world. The famous home remedy Seera is known to cure common colds. Apart from curing colds it has anti- inflammation properties.
Atta Halwa
Atta halwa or whole wheat flour halwa is prepared from atta, water, sugar and ghee. Whole wheat is loaded with vitamins and minerals like vitamin B1, B9.
Benefits Of Atta Halwa
Whole wheat as such has many benefits and when cooked along with ghee and dry fruits the goodness of each ingredient combines and they complement each other enhancing the absorption of vitamins and minerals. Ghee taken in moderation has numerous benefits. Wheat contains vitamins like B1, B9 which are essential in the development of bones. It aids in curing Anemia, makes the skin glow. It boosts the immunity of the body keeping infection at bay thus helping fight diseases. It helps in development of brain which leads to good intellect. When one has atta halwa all these benefits are absorbed by our body along with mind boggling taste that one enjoys.
Ingredients (serve - 2 pax)
2 beetroots grated
1/4th cup residual khoya after making ghee
1/2
cup malai/cream or 3-4 tablespoons of ghee
1/4th cup jaggery
powder/sugar
Assorted chopped dry fruits you have at home as much as
you wish
1/4th tsp green cardamom/elaichi powder
Step By Step (photo wise)
Step 1
Add beetroot and khoya in a heavy bottomed pan/kadai and put on medium flame.
Step 2
Stir well. You can cover and cook for 5 mins stirring in between.
Step 3
Add jaggery powder/sugar.
Step 4
Add dry fruits and elaichi powder and keep stirring and cooking on medium flame till the water evaporates.
Step 5
Keep cooking till the halwa is well roasted. Since we keep it healthy by not adding too much ghee it will not leave ghee.
Step 6
Ready to be enjoyed with family members.

Method
1) Add beetroot and khoya in a heavy bottomed pan/kadai and put on medium flame.
2) Stir well. You can cover and cook for
5 mins stirring in between.
3) After 5 minutes the beetroots and
khoya softens.
4) Add jaggery powder/sugar and dry
fruits and elaichi powder and keep stirring and cooking on medium flame till
the water evaporates and the halwa is well roasted.
5) Since we keep it healthy by not
adding too much ghee it will not leave ghee.
6) Ready to enjoy.
